FULL MOUTH REHABILITATION (FMR)

FULL MOUTH REHABILITATION (FMR)

Neuromuscular Dentistry, CURE THE TMD!

Jaw joints, muscles, supporting structures (gums and bones), and teeth work in harmony with each other for the function of eating, biting, swallowing, and speaking!

Their synchronized working gets disturbed typically during parafunction like clenching and grinding or due to bad bite. Other reasons may include an injury to the jaw joint, emotional stress or arthritis. Sometimes it is self-invited by the patient. Even delay in replacing a single missing tooth or poorly positioned wisdom tooth can invite this serious issue! This dynamic entity of our body is subjected to continuous wear and tear leading to TM joint Disorder (TMD).

As the name suggests, a Full mouth Rehabilitation is complete reconstruction of the teeth which usually involves rebuilding or restoring some or all the teeth to correct the bite patterns to achieve harmony in the stomatognathic system.

The cost would also depend on the extent of the dental problems and the selection of the materials. A very Comprehensive evaluation would be done to evaluate if you’re a candidate who would benefit from a full mouth Rehabilitation. A full mouth rehabilitation usually costs 250,000 Rupees Onward.

Yes!!! the relation of the jaw joint with neck, back and shoulder muscle is bidirectional.

If the teeth are missing, severely worn out or poorly aligned, they force the jaw to shift position and the neighboring muscles to work harder. Repetitive faulty closing of jaw creates constant muscle tension in the back, neck and shoulder which leads to their fatigue, spasm and pain. Even a small interference like poorly positioned wisdom teeth, or a bad bite can go a long way in disrupting our lifestyles causing chronic headaches, neck and back pains. The symptoms could range from ringing ears, tingling hands to even sleep disturbances which makes life frustrating.

Similarly, poor posture can also affect the function of the jaw joints and cause TM Joint Disorder (TMD). When the body is properly aligned, the head balances over the shoulders over the hips, which keeps the spine in alignment. When the head moves forward in front of the shoulder joint, such as when staring at a computer screen or long term use of mobile phones; the jaw, neck and shoulder muscles must work overtime to hold the head upright. The jaw then loses its ability to move smoothly and freely, often causing pain, locking, stiffness, and over time TM Joint Disorder.

Usually the patients are always clueless about such aches and pains despite Medications from neurophysicians, orthopaedics and undergoing physiotherapy. Have you ever experienced such pains? Tell us about your experiences during consultation.

The amount of time needed would depend on the extent of the dental problems. It can range from 1 week to a maximum of 6 months. The last case we completed took around 3 months of time. You may need to come multiple times as and when you are called. You will receive a temporary set of Crowns at all visits so that you don’t have to walk out of the clinic at any point ashamed to smile. These temporary crowns made as per the corrected new bite protect your natural teeth and help you get used to your new bite. This will also aid in keeping activities such as eating and talking normal till you get the final crowns made and fixed.

A lot of patients are kept on Painkillers or antidepressants. Patients often visit to Orthopedics, Physiotherapists, Neurophysicians and sometimes even Psychiatrists but the cause is dental!!! By now the patient gets extremely annoyed and lose his faith in medicine. You may need to consider a well-trained dentist too.

First, your dentist will gather data about your bite pattern. They will observe your TMD signs and symptoms, and take radiographs of your teeth and jaw. With detailed history, thorough examination and T-scans, muscle deprogramming is done with the splint therapy which can give you relief from your symptoms in 48 hours. later, full mouth rehabilitation plan is customized which may require multidisciplinary approach. The goal is to bring back the neuromuscular harmony by correcting the bad bite. In many cases, one may need some physiotherapy sessions too. Don’t worry, we have your back.

Treatment Modalities may include combination of procedures like –

  • Veneers and Crowns – to restore the damaged tooth
  • Endodontic treatment – this refers to fillings or root canal therapy for dental decay.
  • Dental Implants – to replace the root of a missing tooth over which dental crowns can be given.
  • Dental bridges– a fixed sets of crowns (partial denture) that replaces a missing tooth (teeth) by taking the support of the adjacent teeth or implants
  • In some cases, one may need some physiotherapy and splint therapy to reprogram the muscles.
